When collecting points with your robot, the direction the robot faces is crucial for accurate field layout and line marking. Depending on the type of field and the specific collection method you're using, the robot's orientation will vary. This guide will provide detailed instructions and illustrations for ensuring your robot is facing the correct direction when collecting points for various field types.
Rectangular templates
Depending on the selected collection method, points for rectangular fields should be collected using corners, sides, and goalposts. The arrows in the images below indicate the direction in which the front of the robot should be facing:
These collection methods apply to templates like soccer, rugby, American football, lacrosse, Gaelic football, athletics sprint, and flag football. While not all fields will use every method shown, the point collection direction remains the same.
Australian football
While Australian football fields are oval-shaped, they follow the "4 Corners + 4 Goal Posts" method illustrated above, except for the separate interchange gates, which should be collected in the direction shown below:
Baseball and Softball
Baseball and softball fields, due to their unique shapes, require specific collection methods:

Athletics
Athletics templates have various collection methods:
- Track Templates: Collect points counterclockwise.
- Field Templates: Two collection methods are available. Ensure the point at the kickboard is tangential to it.
-
Rounders: This template has one collection method using two corners of the batting square to fix the field's position.
